"የደኅንነታችንም ተግሥጽ በእርሱ ላይ ነበረ በእርሱም ቁስል እኛ ተፈወስን ።" ኢሳ 53፥5

The first part of Doxology of Great Lent

I will praise you, O Lord, for your mercies are forever.
From generation to generation, my mouth shall declare Your truth.
I have sinned, O Jesus, my Lord,
I have sinned, O Jesus, my God,
O my King, do not count the sins I have committed.
But absolve and forgive
My many transgressions
As good and lover of mankind
Have mercy on us according to Your great mercy.

Responsibility

It has been two or three days since we have been engaged in the news about the terribly sad and tragic incident that happened to Beweketu Seyoum presumably in regards to the article he wrote on Addis Guday(Rose) magazine. Individuals, who claim to be offended by what he wrote, attacked Beweqetu. Views, comments, articles and Bible verses gushed on the web from many who are/were infuriated either from being offended by article or from the conclusion that this is the result of religious intolerance. Nevertheless, I believe predisposed conclusions often coerce the serenity we need to see and handle social issues like this.

Bewqetu is known for his creative and humorous writing, next to Sebhat GebreEgeziAbHer. Same as Sebhat, Bewqetu apparently uses anything and everything from economics to politics, from social to religion, to communicate his message to the readers. As from Beweqtu’s  articles I read in the past and especially this particular one, he unequivocally says “እሱ ካመጣው አይቀርልህም” is a means to pacify believers “የሚል ማደናገሪያ” to remain docile to suffering or in other word, rules out the Will of God and faith in that matter. So I do not think he is a person of religion or a member of any faith requiring beliefs. For him anything that happens in faith, is far from true or real so neither Peter’s shadow nor has Paul’s cloth has healed.

Some of his writings share the same style with that of Sibhat GebreEgeziAbeHer’s who is famous for disparaging God and everything related to God. Their writings are not heretical or based on any religious stance; it is a way to become obtrusively exceptional. Consequently, this should not and could not be taken as or be considered as blasphemy but as an opinion which they have every right to express. Evidently, this does not opt out the verity that he has not shown any kind of respect to the Laity of EOTC and consideration on what is disrespectful what makes up to the half of the population.

Pejorative writings and acts are not new in Christianity. As we see from the life of saints, they have been tortured and beaten in the name of God and their people. Accordingly, some recognize saints and martyrs as icons in their belief, and some do not.  Not to forget even Jesus Christ, the Lord of St.TekleHaimanot, was insulted and beaten, by those who did not believe that He is the son of God. St.TekleHaimanot is a saint. Nothing will change that whether Beweqetu disparages or praises Him. As it says, whoever receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. Whoever receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward.

Christians have to put all efforts not to condemn anyone but to look upon all with simple and pure eye ,in order to return them something natural and essential and not to despise anyone ,not to blame, not to disregard anyone and not to attack anyone. Therefore, the persuasive and Christian approach is to give written response and critique to such piece of writings.Being offended is unnecessary but to demand conformity in writing is necessary.

Distressfully and for unclear reasons Beweketu choose St.TekleHaimnot a saint and an icon that is dear to 47 million Ethiopians and 7 million Egyptians for his satiric bashing to validate the message of his article when he could have just used his virtuosic creative writing and avoid disappointing his readers.Even though what had happened to him was tragic and in no way acceptable, his article lack time and value considering responsibility and especially in a society that itself is the bearer of the moral values.

In the process however, I have come to fear that EOTC has become an easy target to pick for those who want to show discontent with the political status quo.

Issued bonds for building Ze Dam are being sold to citizens in any means available. The attempt to secur a sale is made thru SMSing [so far] and also by outreaching the Ethiopians in the diaspora. This is in exception to those who are made to buy the bonds through the companies they work for.

It has not even been a week since the foundation stone have been place yet it seems that a streamlined system has already been in place prior the inauguration ,which is just simply impressive and some thing that we would like to see in other sectors of development [Quick turn around and effectiveness].
But with all things considered it is unlikely possible to avoid thinking that the Nile dam project is not a persuasive evil of some sort used to build a personal capital.

I don't want to think that, seriously I dont.

Do Ethiopians complain ? I don't think we complain enough

When I posed this question, I was actually referring to Ethiopians as a society not as individuals. In both cases however I feel we don’t complain enough or even ask why to an extent that would translate to action.
As a society:
Complaining from whining to protesting requires some sort a reference or norm for right and wrong and which could only be developed by sharing ideas and opinion giving birth to a new idea that compromises for both ideas but in a society like ours that fails short of such space and prefer to silence any opinion what so ever will never feel the pressure of negativity or we may call it oppression or even if it does, it won’t feel it is its innate right to demand for correction and setting a goal in positive intention.
Whining internally and taking this to action and demanding for correction are two different things. But engaging too much in the former will exhaust the energy that demands for change and the process for change. As complaining by itself has a negative energy and should not be timeless when contrasted it will upshot an intender whose intentions are timeless and as a society we need intenders for substantive change.
I don’t think humility or being religious will make one docile, in actuality it would make one assertive, patient and determined.
In other societies complaining, in its misused form, has become so addictive that people complain about cultural nudity that is shown on a documentary show on TV is offensive and demand the show to be terminated. How about that for a lame reflection of reality ?
Here is the poll if you want to slide in your voice on the topic

Survey on Land Grabbing in Ethiopia

“If a country was worried about Energy security, it would not say that it would buy out the Middle East or needs wheat in Iowa it would not buy Iowa.”
This was just an attempt to analyze insights of what people think about land grabbing or in the very optimistic term Land investment. Hence the question was asked in a format that would not influence anyone’s response and people had the option of adding their own response as part of the poll. However, most votes trended to the preexisting choices.

The question
Ethiopia, a country whose food security is as risk with a chance of 3 million people to starve in this year, has given pieces of land for 815 investors for the past 5 years. This is over 2.5 million hectares of fertile land, forest and grazing field.
Therefore
Land grabbing in Ethiopia
a.      Should stop immediately = 63 votes
b.      Proper policies should be facilitated = 63 votes
c.       No Land deal to foreigners = 10 votes
d.      Have no idea = 2 votes
e.      Should continue = 1 vote

Looking at the dynamics of the vote shows that partly the initial reactions tended more to the first choice that is Land grabbing should stop immediately. As many statistical polls tend to influence voters opinion, this poll was unlike that; evidently showing other choices gradually but steadily catching up with the highly favored choice. Amazingly the poll ended with two choices having a tie number of vote. As this a very minor and not effectively randomize study, the result will be less of accurate. Yet this does tell about what place this matter holds in the various social and civil issues that are discussed in the society and the degree of awareness.

With the two choices which have been highly favored in focus let us look at what the result and choice tells us
Should stop immediately = 63 votes
Proper policies should be facilitated = 63 votes

The first choice “Land grabbing should stop immediately”
As Ethiopia is still one of the poorest countries and the citizens living under worse condition of poverty but with lash of fertile farmlands and still unable to feed the population, large land acquisitions by foreign power only entail colonialism of some sort and are completely unacceptable.
On the other hand, it can also mean Land investment as beneficial as it many sound have gone beyond limits as Ethiopia have already given out 3 million hectares of Land . Land investment should stop immediately.
The second choice which points out that policies should be facilitated also means two things
First one, to put in place a structure and set up a policy in order to make the deals made with big food cooperation result in a win-win situation after the negotiation. Or secondly, to reinforce the existing one if there is an existing policy that would really potentially benefit all sides of this investment.

These two choices have equally been favored by; among the 139 votes. Some have selected both, these voters in my view feel that Ethiopia could benefit from the Land investment but no action or deal should be made until proper policies are implemented.

My view

Africa, a continent whose population is expected to reach 1 Billion by the end of the decade and with 250 million people going hungry every day, highly requires a development of economy. Foreign power and countries that are concerned about the food security in their own country prefer to own extremely large piece of land from these poor countries so as to reduce the cost of production and middle man from their cost of exporting food and having much larger control on the produce. These land investments are often not made on equal terms with that of the small farmers who as the result of the new agreement and deal are no longer farmers but employees who are dependent on the job not the land. The land will never be theirs as it has already been restructured to meet the requirements of the foreign powers. This will eventually have a human cost as it has, so far, not guaranteed any positive outcome for the continent.

These kinds of deals that highly affect the Indigenous people and local farmers should be done in a well structured system that empowers civil society and small holders. The question that we need to ask ourselves is why this is done in Africa, which is not an epitome for democracy and isn’t there a better way to do this like empowering the local farmers to produce the same food that the foreign countries need and exporting it.

My question to the professionals

I have searched for materials or research papers on this matter by Africans and especially Ethiopians but was not able to find any. This is national matter and anything that is written in that prospect will benefit the nation in creating the awareness and knowing how this new dimension of Food cooperation benefits and affects Africa and more over Ethiopia.
So I am requesting these professionals in the field to give us more information on the matter and the Key elements that needs to be considered when we discuss about Land acquisition and investment.
